Could vitamin D supplements help to lower blood pressure?
New research reveals the possibility that vitamin D supplements could help to lower blood pressure. A recent study of 1484 women showed that those with low levels of vitamin D had a 66% greater risk of high blood pressure. A surprising number, 66% again, showed vitamin D deficiency.
There are several possible reasons why so many women are low in Vitamin D, a nutrient which is related to both sun exposure and dairy products such as milk. Both of these, sadly, are often in short supply in modern living, especially among women. We limit exposure to the sun and lather on sunblock in response to skin cancer fears. Secondly, many women especially avoid dairy products over fear of fat and calories.
The answer to this blood pressure risk may be better found in getting adequate exposure to the sun and eating natural, whole foods rather than resorting to supplements.
